Tips for freelance invoices
Bill against milestones
For projects longer than a few weeks, split the fee into milestones such as a deposit, a midpoint and final delivery. Name the milestone in the line item so the client can match it to your proposal.
Separate revisions from the project fee
If your agreement includes a set number of revision rounds, bill extra rounds as their own hourly line. It makes scope creep visible without a difficult conversation.
State your late fee up front
A short note about late fees, as long as it matches your contract, is one of the most effective ways to get paid on time.
Hold final files until payment
Many freelancers deliver watermarked or low-resolution previews and send final files when the invoice is paid. Say so in the notes.
